Hey Brendan, thanks for the thoughtful post. I thought I’d drop by to say thanks for the mention, and share that I draw a ton of inspiration from reading fiction. As founders I feel one of our many hats is anthropologist, and sometimes an off-world perspective can help me stay connected with what humans value most. I also love thinking about used or magic as stand-ins for technology.
Some authors to start with include Charles Stross, Octavia Butler, Eliot Peper, Sarah J. Maas… and the list goes on! Hope you see you over on Goodreads :)
Sure thing! Appreciate you reading and stopping by to say hi! :)
Love this perspective. I really struggle reading fiction, tbh. Feels unproductive, and I'm not great at enjoying "completely unproductive" things. I get that relaxing is "productive" but idk - just easier to read non-fiction and learn, or zone out on Netflix.
Thinking about the context of being an anthropologist is awesome though. I'm reading Dune right now, and it's pretty great. Easing my way into non-fiction with light reads. That reminds me, I should pick back up: The High Frontier, by Gerard O'Neill.
